Eyeliner trends 2027: purple haze, gold corners and glossed lids

For two years the daily eyeliner has been brown and thin. The spring 2027 runways in New York, shown 11 to 16 September 2026, added colour: lilac, amethyst, gold and icy blue, placed at the inner corner, along the waterline or across the whole lid under a gloss.

Only New York has shown so far. London, Milan and Paris show spring 2027 through early October 2026, so this report covers the first quarter of the season and will be updated. New York alone is consistent across three trade titles: colour as the premium choice, with black kept for graphic work.

What did the spring 2027 runways show for eyeliner?

Marie Claire's report from New York summarises the season as lots of liner: inner-corner accents, tightlining and cat-eyes, with the editorial line that black liner is close to too basic, and gilded and neon colours in its place. Products cited on the runway were ILIA Thru Line at $26 and a creamy kajal at $35 (Marie Claire).

Who What Wear and The Zoe Report both named a purple haze. Pat McGrath painted lilac and gold lids at Anna Sui, Emi Kaneko hollowed the under-eyes in mauve at Sandy Liang, and Christian Cowan sent out amethyst cat-eye press-on nails to match the eyes. Icy and frosted accents appeared at Kim Shui, Luar and Diane von Furstenberg, and glazed lip-gloss lids at Ulla Johnson, Carolina Herrera and Cult Gaia (Who What Wear, with the same looks reported by The Zoe Report).

A third signal is no-mascara make-up: curled bare lashes with a red lip. Without mascara, the liner is the only definition on the eye, which raises the stakes on its colour and placement (Marie Claire).

Which colours replace black in 2027?

The eye-colour column follows complementary-colour logic: the shade opposite on the colour wheel gives the most contrast. Blue eyes gain from bronze, copper and gold; green eyes from plum, aubergine and burgundy; hazel from purple and bronze; brown eyes take almost anything, with blue and purple for contrast and gold for warmth.

Brown stays the daily default. Every 2025 and 2026 source places chocolate, espresso and taupe liners ahead of black for daytime, and black has moved to editorial work: the thick inky stroke at Harris Reed, Toga, Proenza Schouler and Dries Van Noten in the autumn 2026 shows (Who What Wear).

How do you wear purple haze?

Purple haze is a wash of lilac, mauve or amethyst around the eye, drawn with a pencil and softened. The runway versions ran from a full lilac lid at Anna Sui to a mauve shadow in the under-eye hollow at Sandy Liang. The wearable version is a deep plum pencil at the upper lash line, smudged within 40 seconds, then set.

A plum so deep it reads as black from a distance is the easiest entry. Up close it shows violet; across a room it shows as definition. India Anaïs made its Plum Ink gel pencil for this reason, as part of the first edition, which is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

The cool direction predates the season. At the spring 2026 shows, MAC's Kyle Anderson argued that cool tones refine a look, in a season that also showed metallic and gold liners and icy frost (AOL). Spring 2027 turned the cool tone into a colour.

Where does gold go on the eye?

Gold goes at the inner corner. One dot of metallic gold liquid liner at the tear duct, no larger than the head of a pin, brightens the eye and reads as a highlight. A second option is a fine gold line drawn just above a black wing, so the wing has a lit edge.

Keep gold off the waterline. Metallic and pearl pigments on the rim of the lid are the formulas optometrists warn against, because the meibomian glands along the lid margin are blocked by product placed there (Coveteur). The inner corner is skin, not rim, and it is safe for a metallic.

How do you do icy accents and glossed lids?

Icy accents are a frosted silver-white or pale blue at the inner corner and the centre of the lid, seen at Kim Shui, Luar and Diane von Furstenberg. They come from the frost revival of the 2025 to 2026 winter and from Pinterest's forecast of icy blue and frosted make-up rising 150 per cent in 2026 (BeautyMatter). A white or silver pencil at the inner third of the lower lash line gives the same effect at daytime strength.

Glossed lids are a clear gloss or balm pressed over a thin liner and bare skin, the lip gloss lid that Romy Soleimani did at Ulla Johnson. At home, use a product made for the eye area, keep the gloss to the centre of the lid, and expect creasing after a few hours. Gloss on the lid moves, so the liner underneath should be a long-wear gel or liquid, set before the gloss goes on.

What carried over from autumn 2026?

Three autumn 2026 ideas are still on the runway for spring 2027. Tightlining, a pencil or gel pushed into the upper waterline so the lash base looks denser with no visible line, was called back at Tory Burch, Julien Macdonald, Dior, Ashlyn and Christian Cowan (Who What Wear). Under-eye liner and double cat-eyes appeared at Ashlyn, Proenza Schouler, Sergio Hudson and Christian Siriano (Coveteur). The smudged, slept-in kohl of Givenchy, Gucci and Prada continues as the alternative to the precise line.

Across both seasons the line is either precise and graphic or smudged and lived-in. The thin middle-ground wing of the clean-girl years is the one shape the editors have retired.

How do you apply coloured liner without it moving?

You will need:

• An eye primer or a little concealer
• A translucent powder and a small brush
• A coloured pencil or gel for the lash line, or a liquid for a dot
• A matching powder shadow, for setting a pencil

1. Prime the lid and dust translucent powder along the lash line to absorb oil.
2. Draw the colour where the runway placed it: plum at the upper lash line, gold or ice at the inner corner.
3. Smudge a pencil within 40 seconds if you want it soft, then set it with a matching powder shadow.
4. For the waterline, use a freshly sharpened pencil, never a metallic or pearl, and replace the pencil three months after first use there.
5. Remove it fully at night with an oil-based or biphase remover held on the closed lid for about 20 seconds.

The longevity steps are the standard list from L'Oréal Paris: primer, powder, waterproof formulas, pencil under liquid, shadow to set. Colour follows the same rules as black.
