Eyeliner for mature eyes

The eye area changes in four ways with age. The upper lid loses firmness and folds lower over the lash line. The skin becomes thinner, drier and finely lined. The lashes thin and lighten. The outer corner of the eye drops a little. Eyeliner that worked at thirty can, at sixty, settle into lines, vanish under a fold or drag the corner down.

The answer is placement and texture, not less make-up. A soft line on the outer third, drawn with a creamy pencil in a colour that is softer than black, gives back the definition that thinner lashes have lost. What changes in the eye area with age?

The upper eyelid skin loses collagen and elastin, so the lid becomes hooded or more hooded than before, and the crease drops. A drawn line on the mobile lid folds under the hood when the eye opens, and creamy liner prints onto the skin above it.

The skin around the eye becomes thinner and drier and forms fine lines at the outer corner and under the lower lashes. Liner that is too wet or too thick collects in those lines. Lashes thin, shorten and lose pigment, which removes the dark frame the eye had before. The outer corner of the eye often lowers, so any line that follows it downward makes the eye look tired.

Which eyeliner formula suits mature eyes?

A cream or gel pencil. It glides over thin skin without pulling, it can be smudged into a soft edge, and it sets enough to stay. Stiff liquid liners draw a hard edge that shows every wobble and every fine line, and they need a stretched lid to apply, which is the one thing thin lid skin should not have done to it. Which colours are softer than black?

Brown, plum and navy. Each gives definition with less contrast than black against thinner, lighter lashes and paler skin. Chocolate brown suits warm colouring and brown eyes. Plum brings out green and hazel eyes and reads as black from a distance. Navy brightens the whites of the eyes and suits blue and grey eyes (Jane Iredale).

Black is not banned. It works as a tightline, pressed into the lash base for density, or as a thin evening line set with a dark shadow. As a full hard line on both lids, it draws attention to the outline of the eye and away from the eye itself. India Anaïs Plum Ink, a gel pencil in deep plum, was made as the softer-than-black daily option; the first edition is sold out, and the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

Where should the line go to lift the eye?

Just above the lashes, concentrated on the outer third, and ending in a small lift. The line stays thin and close to the lash roots across the middle of the lid, thickens slightly from the outer third, and finishes a few millimetres past the outer corner, angled up along the lower lash line. The lift counters the drop at the outer corner.

• A gel or cream pencil in brown, plum or navy
• A small, firm smudge brush or a pencil brush
• A matching powder shadow
• An eye primer or a thin concealer
• A mirror at eye level, in daylight, with the elbow resting on a table

1. Prime the lid with a thin coat of eye primer or concealer and press a little translucent powder over it, so the pencil has a dry surface.
2. Look straight ahead with the eye open and relaxed. Do not stretch the lid.
3. Starting at the outer third of the upper lashes, draw short strokes into the lash base, working toward the outer corner.
4. Continue the line 2 to 4 mm past the outer corner, angled up toward the tail of the brow, not down.
5. If you want the line across the whole lid, draw the inner two-thirds hair-thin, pressed into the lashes.
6. Smudge the top edge of the line with the brush in small strokes, so no hard edge remains.
7. Press matching powder shadow over the line to set it. Tightline the upper lash base if lashes are sparse.

Should you line the lower waterline after 50?

Leave it bare, or use a flesh-toned pencil. A dark line on the lower rim closes the eye, pulls the corner down, and migrates into the fine lines beneath the lashes. A nude or peach pencil on the lower waterline widens the eye and hides redness.

There is an eye-health reason too. Dry eye becomes more common with age, and optometrist Dr Alexa Hecht explains that product on the waterline blocks the meibomian glands that keep tears from evaporating (Coveteur). If the eyes already feel gritty or water in the wind, keep every product off the rim and see an optician. For lower definition, smudge a soft brown shadow under the outer third of the lower lashes, on the skin, not the rim.

How do you stop liner settling into fine lines?

Dry the surface first, keep the line thin, and set it. Primer or a thin concealer smooths the lid and takes the oil off, and translucent powder gives the pencil a matte surface. A thick or wet line has more product to move; a thin smudged line has almost none.

Skip heavy eye cream immediately before liner. Apply it at night, or in the morning at least 15 minutes before make-up and blot the lid. L'Oréal Paris lists primer, powder along the lash line, setting the pencil with shadow, and a setting spray as the steps that keep liner in place through a day (L'Oréal Paris). Blot, do not rub, if the lid feels oily at midday.

Which current trends suit mature eyes?

Most of them. The autumn and winter 2026 runways favoured tightlining at Tory Burch and Dior, smudged kohl at Givenchy and Prada, and pencil over liquid with brown mascara in the editorial translation (The Zoe Report). Every one of those is a soft, close-to-the-lashes technique.

The spring 2027 New York shows added colour: lilac and gold lids, mauve under-eyes, gilded inner corners. On a mature eye, a dot of gold at the inner corner and a plum smudge at the outer lashes take the trend without a hard line anywhere. The one trend to leave alone is the thick black lower liner, which was shown for spring 2026 and closes an older eye from underneath.
