Two finishes give a nail a glow without a mirror. Aura nails do it with colour: a soft halo in the middle of the nail that fades out to a second colour at the edges, like the blurred photographs sold at aura-reading booths. Pearl polish does it with light: fine pearl pigment inside the lacquer that turns a milky or pastel colour into satin.
Both belong to the softer end of effect polish, and both are current. Aura nails have been in the trend lists since 2021 and appear in the Dutch press for autumn 2026 in burgundy. Built-in pearl is a 2026 forecast and the pearlescent satin finish of the spring 2027 runways.
What are aura nails?
Aura nails are a nail-art design in which colours are painted in a circular gradient, a glowing centre that fades into a different colour at the edges. PureWow describes the look as a mix of colours painted in a circular ombré to show your aura, and traces it to Instagram around 2021, inspired by aura photography. Since no two auras are the same, no two aura sets are either.
The classic version puts a warm or bright colour in the centre and a paler or cooler one around it: pink into white, orange into yellow, violet into lilac. A darker version reverses it, with a glowing centre on a deep base. Dutch title Jan Magazine lists aura in burgundy among its autumn and winter 2026 to 2027 trends on its trend pages.
The look has stayed because it flatters. The blur hides uneven application, the glow suits short nails and the colours can be tuned to any skin tone or outfit. Nail artist Hang Nguyen told Marie Claire that trends like aura nails with soft, dreamy effects would continue in 2025, in its 2025 trend report, and they did.
How do salons make the aura gradient?
With an airbrush. Celebrity nail artist Brittney Boyce, founder of Nails of LA, explains in PureWow that most of the aura nails with a faded look are done with an airbrush, usually over acrylic enhancements, though airbrush systems for gel exist. The airbrush sprays a fine mist of colour in a circle, and the mist thins at the edge, which gives the even, edgeless fade.
Airbrushing is a salon skill. It needs a compressor, thinned polish or airbrush gel, stencils or steady hands, and a top coat to seal the mist, which is fragile on its own. Ask for it by name; not every salon offers it.
The sponge method is the home version. It puts the same soft-edged circle down by stippling, and it works with ordinary air-dry lacquer.
How do you do aura nails at home with a sponge?
You will need:
- Base coat
- A pale crème or milky polish for the base colour
- A brighter or deeper crème for the centre glow
- A make-up wedge sponge, cut into small pieces
- A piece of foil or plastic as a palette
- A glossy top coat, and a small clean-up brush with remover
- Apply base coat, then two thin coats of the base colour. Let it dry for at least ten minutes; the sponge will lift wet polish.
- Pour a small pool of the centre colour onto the foil.
- Dab a corner of the sponge into the pool, then dab it twice on the foil to take off the excess. A nearly dry sponge gives the softest edge.
- Press the sponge gently onto the middle of the nail in a rough circle. Lift and press again, several times, moving the sponge a fraction each time, so the edge of the circle blurs. Boyce's instruction in PureWow is to apply the polish in a circular shape, press it gently onto the nail, and lift and press multiple times to diffuse the gradient.
- Let it set for a minute, then repeat with a second pass in the very centre for more glow.
- Clean the skin around the nail with the brush and remover.
- Apply one generous coat of glossy top coat. It smooths the sponge texture and melts the two colours together.
For a three-colour aura, add a middle ring in a shade between the two. For a subtle aura, use a sheer or jelly polish for the centre and build it in two passes.
What is built-in pearl nail polish?
Built-in pearl polish is a lacquer with fine pearl pigment mixed into the formula, so the sheen comes from inside the colour, not from a powder rubbed on top. Manicurists forecasting 2026 for Who What Wear named built-in pearl polish as a trend, the pearl in the formula in place of a chrome layer over it.
The pearl pigment is an interference pigment, a transparent platelet of mica or glass coated with a thin film of titanium dioxide, as described on the Wikipedia page on effect pigments. The coating reflects one colour, often a blue or violet flash, that shows at the curve of the nail where the angle changes. Because the platelets are dispersed through the film, the sheen is soft and even, closer to satin than to metal.
India Anaïs Moonstone is a pearl polish of this type, a milky white with a blue-violet pearl that shows at the edge of the nail. It is sold out with the first edition; the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

The glazed donut look that made pearl chrome famous used a sheer beige-pink gel and a pearly chrome powder over a no-wipe top coat, as recorded by Bustle. Built-in pearl is the lamp-free relative: softer, quieter and removable with an ordinary pad.
Why is satin pearl the finish of spring 2027?
The New York spring 2027 runways in September 2026 were full of it. Bustle's round-up of the shows lists sheer pearlescent nails at Diane von Furstenberg, pearlescent satin blues, whites and pinks at Sandy Liang, and a pearlescent satin-ribbon sheen at Anna Sui. Satin pearl works with the two other spring signals: milky whites as the permanent neutral, and short, round or oval shapes. A pearl polish on a short nail reads as a small polished stone.
Aura and pearl combine well. An aura in two pearl shades, sponged in the same way, gives a gradient that also shifts with the light. Seal it with a glossy top coat and reapply the top coat every two to three days.
