Shimmer is a nail polish finish that contains fine mica or pearl particles in a coloured base, which reflect light softly and give the colour a gentle glow without the flash of glitter.

Shimmer polish contains fine mica or pearl pigments suspended in a coloured base. The particles are small enough to feel smooth on the nail and reflect light softly across the whole surface. The effect is a glow, not a sparkle. Glitter uses larger polyester (PET) pieces that catch light as separate points.
The particles break up the flat plane of the colour, so brush strokes, ridges and small application flaws show less than under a crème. Shimmer is often a friendlier finish for beginners for this reason. Most shimmers cover in two coats.
Shimmer is a family with several branches. A pearl or frost shimmer has a milky, satin sheen. A micro shimmer looks almost like a crème until light hits it. A duochrome shimmer shifts colour with the angle of view. Built-in pearl, where the pearl is in the formula and not added as a chrome powder, is a 2026 trend named by manicurists (Who What Wear).
A glossy top coat deepens the glow. A matte top coat turns shimmer into a soft, frosted texture. India Anaïs includes a pearl finish in its lacquer range. The first edition is sold out and the next edition is planned for spring 2027.
