Festive nails for December: Sinterklaas, Christmas and New Year

December has four occasions in the Netherlands and most of Europe: Sinterklaas on 5 December, the office party, Christmas itself, and New Year's Eve. A manicure lasts about a week, so the month takes three or four sets, and each can be a different look.

The autumn 2026 trend reports agree on the palette: jewel tones under a glass shine, velvet and cat-eye in plum, dark metallics, and milky whites as the neutral. Dated 22 September 2026, this piece assigns one look to each occasion, gives the steps, and explains how to make a party manicure last through the parties.

Which nail look works for which December occasion?

All four use the same shape. The Dutch and UK trade press describe 2026 nails as shorter, round or oval, with plain colours ahead of nail art (Jan Magazine). Short round nails also chip least, because there are no corners to catch.

The four looks share two products: a base coat and a glass top coat. Change only the colour between occasions, and the routine stays the same.

Sinterklaas: why a chili red?

Sinterklaas is red and gold, so the nail is red. The red of the season is a cool cherry with a chili edge. Pantone's spring 2027 report, published 21 September 2026, names Chili Pepper as one of its ten colours, and 7 For All Mankind showed cherry red nails at the spring 2027 New York shows (FashionUnited; Bustle). Deep cherry red was already in Marie Claire's 2025 trend list.

A red with a blue heart flatters warm and cool skin alike, which matters at a family table where the same bottle is passed around. Two thin coats of a well-pigmented crème, capped over the free edge, and a glass top coat. The house version is Rouge Anaïs, the most pigmented crème of the first edition from India Anaïs, which is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

Red stains the nail plate more than any other colour. A base coat under it keeps the plate white for the next set.

The office party: how do you do a moonstone French?

A moonstone French is a French manicure with a sheer milky white base and a pearl tip. The base evens out the nail and leaves it looking bare. The tip is a milky white with a fine blue-violet interference pearl inside the formula, so the sheen is soft and satin, not chrome. It photographs well under office lighting, which is flat and cold.

Milky white is the neutral of 2026. Pantone named Cloud Dancer its colour of the year on 4 December 2025 (Marie Claire) and built-in pearl polish, with the pearl inside the formula, was one of the manicurist forecasts for 2026.

Keep the tip thin. On a short round nail a micro French of 1 to 2 mm reads as light on the edge. A wider tip on a short nail makes the nail look shorter.

Christmas: why deep violet velvet?

Velvet nails are a magnetic finish in which the magnet is held far enough from the wet lacquer that the particles lift into a soft, even sheen with no hard line. In daylight the nail reads as a plum crème. Under candles and fairy lights it glows from inside, which is why it is the Christmas dinner look.

The Zoe Report's autumn 2026 forecast lists jewel tones with an ultra-glossy finish, jewel-tone cat-eyes and velvet chrome, and manicurist Nicole Wong describes velvet chrome as more diffused than a cat-eye line (The Zoe Report). Pinterest's 2026 forecast has dark plum and deep burgundy searches up 220 per cent (NewBeauty).

Technique from the gel world applies to air-dry velvet: hold the magnet parallel to the side of the nail about 0.5 cm from the wet coat and sweep from both sides towards the centre; the further the magnet, the softer the glow (Vettsy). With air-dry lacquer, set the magnet within about 20 seconds of the second coat, before the film levels.

New Year's Eve: how do you do gold tips?

Gold tips are a fine gold foil painted on the free edge of each nail, over a base colour. Over deep plum the gold reads as a lit edge; over milky white it reads as a thin gold ring. Dark metallics in gunmetal and bronze are in The Zoe Report's autumn 2026 list, and chrome placed only on the tips was a 2025 trend, so gold on the edge is the version between the two.

You will need:

• Base coat
• A plum crème or a sheer milky white
• A gold foil shimmer lacquer
• A fine striping brush or the lacquer's own brush
• A glass top coat

1. Apply base coat and two thin coats of the base colour. Wait 2 minutes between coats.
2. Rest the little finger of the painting hand on the table for support.
3. Draw the gold along the free edge in one stroke from side to side, 1 to 2 mm deep. Cap the edge.
4. Let the gold dry 2 minutes, then seal with top coat.

A foil shimmer covers in one coat, so one stroke is enough. Two strokes thicken the tip and show brush marks.

How do you make a party manicure last through the parties?

Polish fails at three points: before painting, during painting and after. The protocol from Manucurist covers all three: push back cuticles and degrease the plate with remover, apply base, two thin coats capped over the free edge, and top coat, with 1 to 2 minutes between coats; then reapply top coat every 2 to 3 days, wear gloves for washing up and avoid long hot soaks.

December adds two enemies. Cold, dry air cracks cuticles and lifts the film at the edges, so a drop of cuticle oil every night is the one step that keeps a manicure looking new. Hot water at the sink expands the nail plate and loosens the film, so gloves for the dishes after dinner matter more than any top coat.

Plan the month in three sets. Red for Sinterklaas in the first week, the moonstone French for the middle of the month, and velvet for Christmas, with gold tips added over the velvet or a fresh milky base on 31 December.
