How to apply magnetic cat-eye nail polish at home

A cat-eye manicure is applied one nail at a time, and that single habit decides whether the line of light is sharp or smeared. The polish goes on like any other; the magnet is the extra step, and it has to happen while the coat is wet.

The routine takes about fifteen minutes for ten nails once the first coat is dry. The numbers that matter are the distance of the magnet and the seconds it is held, and both are easier than they sound.

What do you need to apply cat eye nail polish?

You will need:

• A base coat, ideally one that fills fine ridges, because a smooth ground keeps the reflection unbroken (Geloem).
• The magnetic cat-eye polish, rolled between the palms for a minute so the heavy flakes spread through the bottle.
• A bar magnet for the classic line. A round magnet is optional for velvet and stars.
• A glossy top coat, quick-dry if possible.
• Remover, a lint-free wipe, a small clean-up brush and cuticle oil.
• For the gel version: an LED or UV lamp and a no-wipe gel top coat.

A dark or jewel-tone base shade gives the strongest line. Over a pale nude the band nearly disappears, so if the cat-eye polish itself is sheer, paint one coat of black or a deep colour under it (Salomé Atelier).

How do you apply air-dry cat eye nail polish step by step?

1. Prep the nails. File to shape, push back the cuticle, buff lightly with nothing coarser than 240 grit and wipe the plate with remover to take off oil (Essie).
2. Apply one thin coat of base coat to all ten nails. Let it dry for 1 to 2 minutes.
3. Apply one thin coat of the cat-eye polish to all ten nails. Do not use the magnet yet. This coat builds the dark ground and dries in 3 to 5 minutes, the usual touch-dry time for regular polish (Nagelstudios.nl).
4. Paint a slightly thicker second coat on one nail only. Cap the free edge with the tip of the brush.
5. Within 20 seconds, hold the bar magnet 3 to 5 mm above the wet coat, edge parallel to the line you want, without touching the polish. Hold still for 15 to 20 seconds. The band appears within the first few seconds and sharpens as you hold.
6. Lift the magnet straight up and move to the next nail. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for all ten nails, the same hand first.
7. Wait 2 to 3 minutes after the last nail, then apply a glossy top coat with light strokes. The top coat deepens the contrast and protects the band.
8. Clean up the skin with a brush dipped in remover, and apply cuticle oil once the top coat is touch-dry.

How do the steps change for cat-eye gel polish?

The gel version uses the lamp to freeze the pattern, so the magnet is held for less time and the cure follows at once. Vettsy's guide gives 3 to 5 mm and 5 to 10 seconds for the crispest line, then a 10 second flash cure to lock the look, then the full cure (Vettsy).

1. Prep, then apply gel base coat and cure.
2. Apply one thin coat of the cat-eye gel to all nails and cure.
3. Apply a second coat to one nail. Hold the magnet 3 to 5 mm above it for 5 to 10 seconds.
4. Flash-cure that nail for about 10 seconds before moving on, so the flakes cannot drift back.
5. Repeat for every nail, then give all nails the full cure.
6. Apply gel top coat and cure. Wipe the tacky layer if the top coat needs it.

Gel bought in the EU should be labelled HEMA-free for home use, because hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) is restricted to professional use under Commission Regulation (EU) 2020/1682, and TPO-free, because that photoinitiator has been banned since 1 September 2025 (Scratch; Cosmetics Business).

How far away and how long do you hold the magnet?

Distance sets the sharpness, time sets whether the pattern survives. The closer the magnet, the tighter the band; the further, the softer the glow.

How do you make a cat-eye manicure last?

The band itself does not wear off, because the flakes are inside the film. What wears is the film, at the tip and the edges. The standard longevity routine applies: cap the free edge on every coat, reapply top coat every 2 to 3 days, use cuticle oil daily and wear gloves for wet chores (Manucurist). With that care an air-dry cat-eye lasts 3 to 6 days.

A thick, glassy top coat suits cat-eye better than a thin one. It fills the tiny steps between tilted flakes, so the surface is smooth and the reflection reads as one clean line. Reapplying it also renews the contrast, which is why a three-day-old cat-eye looks new again after a fresh top coat.
