Amethyst nails: how to wear purple in 2027

Purple has spent a decade as the colour people buy once and wear at Halloween. In September 2026 that changed. On the New York runways for spring 2027, purple was the only saturated shade to appear at more than one show, and it appeared as a magnetic cat-eye. Pantone's spring 2027 palette, published the same week, includes Lavender Oil. On Pinterest, dark plum searches had already more than tripled.

Purple on the nail is a question of finish. A deep amethyst crème is a jewel tone. A sheer lilac jelly is a glass nail. A plum velvet is an evening nail. Why is purple the nail colour of 2027?

Three signals point the same way. On the runway, MONSE showed a vivid violet by Dazzle Dry and Christian Cowan showed purple cat-eye press-ons with black lines by KISS at New York Fashion Week for spring 2027, as reported by Bustle in September 2026. Who What Wear names purple and amethyst cat-eye as one of the week's nail trends.

In colour forecasting, Pantone's Fashion Color Trend Report for New York spring and summer 2027, published on 21 September 2026, lists Lavender Oil among its ten colours, according to FashionUnited. In search, Pinterest Predicts 2026 recorded a 220 per cent rise in searches for dark plum and deep burgundy nails. Who What Wear's 2026 forecast had also named Y2K mauve as a colour of the year.

The lip follows the nail. The same Pinterest report lists opalescent and icy blue makeup among its rising searches for 2026. After two years of warm brown and latte tones, cool colour is the reversal, and purple is its most wearable form.

Which purple suits which occasion?

Four purples cover most days. Each is a different finish, and the finish decides how the colour reads in daylight and at night.

How do you wear an amethyst cat-eye?

A cat-eye polish is a magnetic lacquer that contains iron-oxide-coated flakes which line up under a magnet while the coat is wet, forming a band of light across the nail. A bar magnet gives a sharp line. A round magnet gives a softer glow. In gel the effect is fixed under a lamp; in air-dry polish the film must set before the flakes drift back, according to Vettsy.

Cat-eye was in every 2025 and 2026 trend list. Manicurist Miss Pop told Marie Claire that in 2025 nails would be catching all the light, and The Zoe Report names jewel-tone cat-eyes for fall 2026. Most cat-eye polish sold in the Netherlands is gel. Nebula, the India Anaïs cat-eye, is an air-dry deep violet with a gold flash, set by hand with a bar magnet, so every nail is a little different. It is sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027.

You will need: a base coat, a magnetic violet lacquer, a bar magnet and a glass top coat.

1. Apply base and one thin coat of the magnetic lacquer. Let it set for 1 to 2 minutes.
2. Apply a second, slightly fuller coat to one nail at a time.
3. Hold the bar magnet 2 to 3 mm above the wet nail, at a slight angle, for 5 to 10 seconds until the line of light appears. Move on to the next nail before the coat sets.
4. Seal with a glass top coat, which fixes the line in place.

How do you wear sheer lilac as glass nails?

Glass nails are sheer, layerable nails that look juicy, glossy and glass-like, in the words of manicurist Harriet Westmoreland, and they are one of Who What Wear's six beauty trends for 2026. In lilac they are the daytime purple: one coat of a sheer cool violet jelly is a tint, three thin coats build a deep glass effect under a top coat.

The jelly lets the nail show through, so the colour changes with the light and with your skin. It also forgives a chip, because the nail beneath is close in tone. Amethyst Glaze, the house jelly in sheer cool violet, was made for this; it is sold out and the next edition is planned for spring 2027. Worn as a single wash, it is the nail pairing for the cool-toned glazed lip.

When do you choose deep amethyst crème or plum velvet?

A deep amethyst crème is the jewel-tone version of purple. The Zoe Report lists jewel tones with an ultra-glossy finish first among its fall 2026 trends, and a deep amethyst with a blue heart reads as a cut stone under a glass top coat. Two coats give full opacity. It is the autumn and winter purple, and the one that pairs with a blackcurrant gloss over plum liner.

Plum velvet is the evening version. Velvet is a magnetic finish made by holding the magnet about 0.5 cm from the wet polish and sweeping from both sides to the centre, so the flakes lift into an even glow with no single line. In daylight it reads as a plum crème; at night it glows from inside. Manicurist Nicole Wong describes velvet chrome as more diffused and more luxurious than a plain chrome, in The Zoe Report.

What lip and liner go with purple nails?

Keep the lip in the same temperature as the nail. A sheer lilac or amethyst nail pairs with a clear, cool-violet glaze on the lip, so the mouth reads as wet crystal and the hand as tinted glass. A deep amethyst or plum nail pairs with a cola lip in plum and blackcurrant: plum liner filled in, berry-red gloss pressed on the centre.

On the eye, a plum gel pencil smudged at the lash line brings out green and brown eyes and stays in the family of the nail. A single dot of gold liquid liner at the inner corner is enough with a cat-eye nail, because the nail already has its gold flash. Coloured liner is itself a 2027 signal from the same runways, so purple on the eye is in step with purple on the hand.
