Violet Cola lips: the cola lip in plum and blackcurrant

Cherry cola lips were the lip look of 2023: a burgundy-brown liner filled in all over, a red gloss on top, the edges blended so the mouth looked like a glass of cola with the light in it. It has stayed in the trend lists ever since and Douglas still lists it as a 2026 look. Every version so far has been brown-red.

Violet Cola moves the recipe to the cool side. Plum liner replaces brown. Blackcurrant-red gloss replaces cherry. The technique is identical, and so is the shape of the result: dark at the edges, juicy at the centre. It is the evening lip of India Anaïs, and it was made to be done in three steps.

What are Violet Cola lips?

Violet Cola lips are a two-product lip look that fills the whole lip with a deep plum liner and presses a blackcurrant-red gloss onto the centre, blended outward so the colour grades from dark plum at the edge to juicy berry in the middle. The gloss gives the wet cola shine. The liner gives the depth and keeps the gloss from feathering.

It differs from cherry cola in temperature only. Cherry cola uses a brown or burgundy liner and a warm red gloss, and reads as brown-red. Violet Cola uses a plum-brown liner and a cool blackcurrant gloss, and reads as purple-red. On the same face, cherry cola warms the skin and Violet Cola cools it.

Where does the cola lip come from?

Cherry cola lips began on TikTok in 2023. Creator @blendsbypouja originated the look and makeup artists @musthavesxt and @soulsophiamua popularised it, and the trend reached 117 million TikTok mentions, according to Refinery29. It builds on the older Douyin gradient lip, in which colour is concentrated at the centre and faded toward the edge.

The look has lasted because it is a recipe, not a product. Any brown liner and any red gloss will do it, so brands from NYX to By Terry rode the trend without owning it. Three years on, Douglas in the Netherlands still lists cherry cola lips among its 2026 make-up trends. A recipe with a name invites variants, and the obvious next flavour after cherry is blackcurrant.

How do you do Violet Cola lips in three steps?

You will need: a creamy deep plum-brown lip liner, a blackcurrant-red gloss with real pigment, a small lip brush or a clean fingertip, and a tissue.

1. Fill with plum. Line the natural edge of the lip with the plum liner, then fill the whole lip with it, working inward from the edge. Blot once with a tissue so the liner is a stain, not a coat. This is the base that gives the look its depth and stops the gloss bleeding.
2. Press on the blackcurrant. Dab the blackcurrant-red gloss onto the centre of the lower lip and the middle of the upper lip. Press, do not sweep, so the pigment stays in the middle.
3. Blend to an ombré. With the brush or fingertip, feather the gloss outward until it fades into the plum before the edge. Press the lips together once. For a wetter finish, add a second small dose of gloss at the centre only.

Plum Line, the house deep plum-brown liner, and Violet Cola, the blackcurrant glaze made to be pressed over it, were designed for these three steps. Both are sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. Any creamy plum liner and any pigmented berry-red gloss give the same shape.

Why does the cola lip in plum work now?

Dark, cool lips are rising. Pinterest Predicts 2026 records vamp romantic dark lips up 160 per cent, and the same report puts dark plum and deep burgundy nails up 220 per cent. Cherry cola itself is still live, with 117 million mentions and a place in Douglas's 2026 list. Blackcurrant and plum are under-served against brown-red, which is where the cola lip has stayed since 2023.

The liner is back too. Blurred lips, the headline lip trend of 2026, grew 300 per cent in Google searches and lead with berry shades, according to Who What Wear. Makeup artist Christian Briceno describes the look as stained into the mouth, not painted on. Lip liner searches rose 52 per cent in Who What Wear UK's 2026 report, and the liner category grew 60 per cent in two years, according to Glossy Pop. Violet Cola is a blurred lip with shine: the plum stain gives the diffused edge, the gloss gives the wet centre.

The format spreads on its own. A two-product recipe with a food name is the fastest-spreading kind of lip trend, and cola already has flavours. Cherry, vanilla, violet: a creator can ask which cola is yours and answer with two products.

Which nails go with Violet Cola lips?

Oxblood-plum nails in a crème finish. The dark cherry and oxblood nail was the signature of the mob-wife aesthetic of 2024 and 2025, and it persists in the 2026 to 2027 lists as the dark, moody pole opposite the clean, sheer one. The Zoe Report puts jewel tones, garnet among them, first for fall 2026. Two coats of an opaque plum crème, short and round, with a glass top coat, and the hand matches the edge of the lip.

Velvet Nocturne, the house plum with a soft magnetic sheen, reads as a plum crème in daylight and glows at night; Violet Spell, the deep amethyst crème, is the cooler alternative. Both are sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027. On the eye, a deep plum gel pencil smudged at the lash line keeps the face in one family.
