How to wear gloss over lipstick

Gloss over lipstick is the oldest lip combo and the one that goes wrong most often. The gloss loosens the lipstick, the two move together and the colour ends up outside the line. The fix is order, quantity and placement: lipstick first and blotted, gloss second and thin, and shine at the centre where it is seen.

Done this way the pairing gives a lip with depth that neither product gives alone. The lipstick supplies colour that stays. The gloss supplies light. The technique is the same one that makes cherry cola lips and the 1990s brown-lined lip work.

Can you put lip gloss over lipstick?

Yes. Gloss is designed to go over other lip products, the way a top coat goes over nail colour. The question is what happens to the lipstick underneath. A gloss is a film of oils and a shine polymer, and oils dissolve the oils and waxes in a creamy lipstick. A full coat of gloss over a full coat of cream lipstick becomes one loose, mobile layer that slides into the lines around the mouth.

Two things stop that. Blotting the lipstick removes the surface oils and leaves a stain that gloss cannot move. How do you apply gloss over lipstick step by step?

You will need

• A lip liner matched to the lipstick or one shade deeper
• The lipstick, ideally matte or satin
• Two tissues, split into single plies
• A clear or sheer gloss
• A lip brush (optional, for a thinner coat)

1. Line the edge of the lips, then fill the whole lip with the liner. This is the base coat.
2. Apply the lipstick over the liner.
3. Blot once with a single ply of tissue. Press, do not drag.
4. Apply a second coat of lipstick and blot again. Two thin blotted coats stay better than one thick one.
5. Take a small amount of gloss on the wand or brush. Wipe off the excess on the rim of the tube.
6. Dab the gloss on the centre of the lower lip and the bow of the upper lip. Leave the corners and the outer edge bare.
7. Press the lips together once. Stop. Do not rub, which pulls the lipstick into the gloss.

For a full glass lip, the gloss can cover the whole mouth, but only over a liner-filled or liquid matte base and only in one thin coat. A second coat adds movement, not shine.

How does gloss change the colour of a lipstick?

Clear gloss makes any lipstick look deeper and more saturated, because a glossy surface reflects light from a smaller area and the colour between the highlights reads darker. A matte red becomes a wetter, richer red. A pale nude turns glassy and can look lighter, because the highlight is white.

Tinted gloss shifts the hue. A gloss with gold pearl warms a plum or a brown. A gloss with blue-violet pearl cools a pink and turns a red toward cherry. How long does gloss over lipstick last?

The shine goes first. A plain gloss wears away in about an hour of talking and drinking (Fashionchick). The lipstick underneath, if it was lined and blotted, stays for several hours as a stain, so the lip never looks bare.
