Seven ways to use clear lip gloss

A clear gloss is the one lip product that has no colour decision attached to it. It is a film of shine polymer and oils, and it does the same job on any surface: it makes the skin under it look wet. On the lips that means a glazed or vinyl finish over whatever colour is there. On a lid or a cheekbone it means a highlight without powder.

The clear tube is also the base of two of the most-shared lip looks of the 2020s. In the disco lip it is the vinyl coat over a nude liner (NewBeauty). In the lip combo it is the top coat over liner and stain. Seven uses follow, with the formula that suits each and the one place to take care.

What is clear lip gloss, and why own one?

Clear lip gloss is a lip gloss that contains a shine base, usually polybutene or hydrogenated polyisobutene thinned with esters and oils, and no pigment. Some clear glosses add a fine pearl or a flavour; the purest versions have neither. Because there is no colour, the tube works over every lipstick, liner and tint in a drawer and never clashes.

Clear gloss is also the safest gloss to use away from the lips. Lip colourants in the EU are approved per product area under Annex IV of the cosmetics regulation, and a colourant allowed on lips is not always allowed near the eyes (Regulation (EC) 1223/2009). A gloss with no colourant removes that question, though the pack should still be checked for a warning against eye-area use.

What are the seven uses of clear lip gloss?

Uses one and six are the base of the lip combo, the most popular lip format on TikTok. Searches for lip combo rose by 97.5% between April 2024 and March 2025, according to data reported by Glossy.

How do you do the glazed lip with clear gloss?

The glazed lip is a bare or nearly bare lip under a thick, even coat of clear shine, so the mouth looks like glass. Hailey Bieber seeded the glazed donut idea for more than a year before Rhode launched in May 2022, and the brand's US$16 Peptide Lip Treatment sold out within an hour (FemFounded). The look depends on smooth lips more than on the product.

You will need

• A soft, damp flannel or a lip scrub for flakes
• A plain balm
• A tissue
• A clear jelly gloss with cushion

1. Remove any flakes with the damp flannel, gently, and only where the lip is peeling.
2. Apply balm and leave it for ten minutes.
3. Blot the balm once so the lip is soft but not slippery.
4. Apply one thin coat of clear gloss across the whole lip, from the centre outward.
5. Press the lips together once.
6. Add a second small dab to the centre of the lower lip and the bow of the upper lip, so the shine has a peak.

A sheer glaze with a faint cool cast gives the same effect with a touch of tone. India Anaïs Amethyst Glaze, a clear glaze with a barely-there violet cast, was made for this look (sold out; the next edition is planned for spring 2027).

Is lip gloss safe to use on the eyelids?

Gloss on the lids is a runway technique. At the Spring/Summer 2027 shows in New York in September 2026, makeup artist Romy Soleimani put a sheer gloss on models' lids at Ulla Johnson and Diane von Furstenberg for a light-reflecting finish, and editors described the look as lip gloss lids (Who What Wear, Marie Claire).

Three rules keep it safe and wearable. Choose a clear gloss with no colourant, no flavour and no menthol or cinnamon, since the eye area reacts to irritants that lips tolerate. Check the pack for a warning against use around the eyes, which the EU regulation requires manufacturers to print where it applies. And apply a thin film with a fingertip, never the wand that has touched the mouth, so nothing from the lips reaches the eye. People who wear contact lenses or have eczema on the lids should skip the technique or ask an optician first.

Gloss on lids creases within an hour or two because it never sets. That is part of the look at a show. For a day, a thin film over a cream shadow lasts longest.

Which clear gloss should you choose for each use?

One tube rarely does all seven jobs. Thick vinyl glosses with polybutene first on the ingredient list give the hardest shine on lips and set brows well, but they crease on lids and feel heavy on cheeks. Thin jelly glosses and oil-glosses, with plant oils and esters high on the list, work on skin and give a softer glaze on the lips. For any use away from the mouth, choose fragrance-free and pearl-free. Fragrance and flavour are the most common causes of stinging around the eyes, and pearl particles on a cheekbone read as highlighter, which may or may not be the intention.

How do you keep a clear gloss clean if it goes everywhere?

A wand that goes from mouth to tube to eyelid brings whatever is on the mouth with it. The US Food and Drug Administration notes that dipping fingers into a product adds bacteria and fungi and advises against sharing makeup at all. For face uses, scrape a small amount onto the back of a clean hand with the wand, and take it from there with a fingertip or a brush.

Keep one clear gloss for lips and a second for the face if the habit becomes daily. A clear tube that turns cloudy, smells different or separates into an oil layer is finished, whatever the date on the pack says.
