The lip stack ritual: liner, colour, top, in 15 seconds

Lip combos are the most watched lip format online, and the reason is practical. One product on the lips looks flat and fades fast. Two or three products in the right order look fuller and last longer. The lip stack takes that idea and gives it a fixed order and a count, the way a manicure has a base coat, a colour and a top coat.

The lip stack ritual is a three-step lip routine that treats the mouth like a manicure: a liner as the base coat, a tinted glaze as the colour and a clear gloss as the top coat. Each step has a number, 1, 2 and 3, so the order is fixed and the result repeats. The system borrows the language of nail lacquer, where base, colour and top are separate products with separate jobs.

A lip combo is the wider name for any lip look built from two or more products. The stack is a lip combo with a set order and a set count. Three products, one direction, about 15 seconds.

The nail parallel is more than a comparison. Lip combos are the most popular lip format on TikTok. Searches for lip combo rose 97.5 per cent and 99.9 per cent of the online conversation about the format takes place on TikTok, according to Glossy Pop. One creator series on the theme reached 50 million views. Lip liner sales in the United States grew 60 per cent between 2022 and 2024 on the same trend.

The sales data follow the content. Lip liner sales grew 28 per cent year to date by October 2025 and tinted lip treatments grew more than 60 per cent, while prestige make-up as a whole rose 1 per cent in the first half of the year (Glossy). Lip liner searches in the UK were up 52 per cent (Who What Wear UK).

The friction in a combo is choice. NYX alone sells more than 120 liner shades (Glossy Pop), and a reader who wants the look has to guess which liner suits which gloss. A numbered stack removes the guessing, because the three products are designed as one set.

Which three layers make the stack?

Step 1 does the most work. A waxy, long-wear pencil stops gloss and lipstick from feathering into the fine lines around the mouth. Rare Beauty reports that 98 per cent of testers agreed its liner helps lipstick stay in place (Rare Beauty). Fill the whole lip with the pencil, and the colour on top has a matched base that outlasts it.

Step 2 is the tint. A glaze with real pigment, pressed on with a fingertip, blends into the liner at the edges so the line disappears. Step 3 is clear and thin. You will need:

• A creamy lip liner, one or two shades deeper than the glaze
• A tinted glaze
• A clear gloss
• A tissue and a clean fingertip

1. Line the edge of the lip with the pencil, starting at the two peaks of the cupid's bow. Fill the whole lip with short strokes. About 6 seconds.
2. Press the tinted glaze onto the centre of both lips with a fingertip and push it outwards to meet the liner. About 5 seconds.
3. Tap one dot of clear gloss on the centre of the lower lip and one on the cupid's bow. Press the lips together once. About 4 seconds.

Blend the liner inward with the fingertip before step 2, so the gloss does not rest on a hard edge. Marie Claire's overlining advice applies to the stack: keep any exaggeration at the cupid's bow, and overline the lower lip at the centre only, because a line drawn out to the corners pulls the mouth down (Marie Claire).
